NOT YOUR TYPICAL JUDY RETREAT
When someone mentions Judy Niemeyer to you, does an image of one of her quilts pop into your head? Do you see a medallion style design with a center star? Do you envision spikes of varying lengths pointing out towards a gaggle or two of flying geese? Do you picture all of this exclusively in shades of batiks? Would you call that image in your head a typical Judy Niemeyer quilt? What is a typical Judy Niemeyer quilt? Is there such a thing? To many quilters who were introduced to Judy Niemeyer and her foundation paper piecing methods back in the late 1990’s, this might be an ongoing assumption of what a Judy Niemeyer quilt might look like – and many of those elements that created the Judy Niemeyer look are still alive and well in even her newest patterns. But times change. Judy and her pattern publishing company, Quiltworx has changed. Now would be a great time to reacquaint yourself with Judy Niemeyer Quiltworx and reassess that image you might have in your head about what a “typical” Judy Niemeyer Quiltworx quilt is.

Michael and his guest, Certified Instructor Tracy Thompson will not only teach and demonstrate basic Quiltworx foundation paper piecing techniques developed by Judy Niemeyer, but will also introduce you to a new world of design and coloring possibilities of Judy’s patterns. Michael will guide you through the steps he takes to create unique quilts, based on all the elements Judy Niemeyer and Quiltworx has to offer, and see them come to life with fabric and color through the use of Quiltster, a digital quilt coloring and planning tool.
For this retreat, you will BRING YOUR OWN PROJECT. Any Judy Niemeyer Quiltworx pattern is acceptable. It can be something you started years ago or something brand new. Or you may purchase an optional kit created by Michael. Check the michaelquilts.com online shop for current availability. If you are registered and attend the retreat, you will receive a discount on the kit through his Michael’s MORE JUDY! CLUB rewards program points.
NOTE: If you are going to work on your own project, please be sure to bring the pattern instructions along with you. Michael and Tracy are knowledgeable, but don’t have every pattern memorized…yet. LOL
