Creating a binder and swatching each group’s fabric unit chart is always very helpful. I try to encourage my students to do this every time they begin a new project. Most of them will take the time to do it.

This is one of my binders. I try to make notes and highlight any important information that needs special attention in the pattern so that when I teach it, I remember to emphasize that info.

Creating a swatched strip piecing foundation paper unit (Wedding Star, Lone Star, Curvy Borders, etc.) is also really helpful to keep on track with correct fabrics when you have lots of strips and want to sew them in the actual order you intended. Use it as your first in the stack, so you always have that one to start off your next strip.

TIP: You can use Quiltster printouts to do this as well. If you print “By Group”, you can use that as your fabric reference as you come to each group in the pattern. You could also print “By Block” and cut out the squares to paste into your pattern’s unit chart.
